Voices from the World

On behalf of my colleagues at the University of British Columbia, I congratulate Toshiba International Foundation for three decades dedicated to expanding knowledge about Japan.

TIFO’s support of faculty, students, and the public at the University of British Columbia and in Vancouver has inspired our students, brought traditional Japanese performance to new audiences, and expanded the reach of our scholarly findings. Over the past decade, we have invited female noh actors to perform the play Lady Aoi (Aoi no Ue), trained researchers in reading premodern documents, produced a book on Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), digitized Japanese visual material for public access, and hosted symposia.

Our graduate students have travelled to the Oki Islands, where they climbed Mount Takuhi to interview the head priest of Takuhi Shrine and worked with stakeholders in Amachō on an interactive exhibit about the cultural legacy of courtly exile and poetry. These invaluable hands-on learning opportunities gave participants a fresh perspective on Japan and a sense of how local practices may have global impact.

We look forward to many more decades of TIFO’s contributions to enhancing understanding, skills, and awareness about Japan across the world.

　ブリティッシュコロンビア大学の同僚を代表して、30年に渡り日本についての知識を広げることに貢献されてきた東芝国際交流財団に祝辞を述べさせて頂きます。

　TIFOによるブリティッシュコロンビア大学とバンクーバーの教職員、学生、一般市民への支援は、学生を鼓舞すると共に、伝統的な日本の演劇を広く一般大衆に広めるだけでなく、私たちの学術的発見の範囲を広げました。過去10年の間に、演劇「Lady Aoi（葵の上）」の公演のための女流能楽師の招待、前近代文書の読み方に関するワークショップ、伊勢物語に関する研究書の出版、日本のヴィジュアル資料のデジタル化、様々なシンポジウムの開催等を行うことが出来ました。

　私たちの大学院生は、隠岐諸島を訪れ、そこで焼火神社の司祭に面会するために焼火山を登り、また、優雅な詩の文化遺産についての対話型展示に関して海士町の方々と協働しました。これらの非常に貴重な実地学習の機会は、参加者に日本についての新鮮な見方と、地域の慣習がどのように世界的な影響を及ぼし得るかについての洞察を与えました。

　私たちは、世界中で日本に対する理解や技能、そして意識を高めるために今後もTIFOが貢献され続けることを期待しております。
