Voices from the World
I am a French-born art historian living in Britain and I have been researching art museums in Japan for the past nine years. My first book, titled “The art lover’s guide to Japanese Museums”, was published in 2014 and it is on this occasion that I encountered TIFO.
The fact that a Japanese foundation showed an interest in my book and research was a huge encouragement for me. The attention TIFO paid to my project was one of the chief stimuli to further the research in the wake of my first publication. Receiving TIFO’s support has enabled me to pursue my investigation and to take it to the next level, in preparation for a new book focusing on Japanese museums. Thanks to the Foundation, I have been able to visit Japan several times and to travel around the country. The impact of TIFO’s support has been transformative: by exploring museums all around Japan, I have been able to look deeper into their history, importance and evolution, and gain a unique overview on the subject. This has also allowed me to meet and exchange with many key figures in the Japanese art world and to deepen my understanding of Japanese art and culture. Visiting museums in person and developing a rapport with museum directors, curators and artists has invaluable importance in my work: TIFO understood the significance of personal research, on-site visits and encounters, as well as the time it takes to undertake such a project.
As my research and work progress, I am able to share my deepening knowledge and impressions with a varied audience in the West, as well as in Japan: people working in the museum world and the art world, students, travellers and art lovers. The interest and appetite for Japanese culture overseas is clearly growing and I am honored to have the opportunity to share my stories. On a more personal level I am delighted that my passion for Japanese culture has been so closely related to my professional activities and this unique opportunity could not have existed without TIFO’s wonderful support.
30 years is a special milestone and I am sure that TIFO will continue to foster further knowledge and promote a better understanding of Japanese culture via an informed and rich program of research and symposia led by international specialists. The Foundation is a great bridge between Japan and the rest of the world and has an important role to play in the development of future generations of experts and specialized projects. I hope that TIFO can make its existence known more widely in the future, even to the non-specialist, perhaps through Japan-Insight, which has a broad appeal.
私はイギリスに住むフランス生まれの美術史家です。私はこの9年間日本の美術館を研究してきました。私の最初の本は、「The art lover's guide to Japanese Museums」と題され、2014年に出版されたもので、この機会にTIFOに出会いました。日本の財団が私の本や研究に興味を示したという事実は私にとって大きな励みになりました。
TIFOが私のプロジェクトに関心を寄せて下さったことは、私が最初の書籍の出版後の研究をさらに進める上での大きな弾みとなりました。 TIFOの支援を受けたことで、私は日本の美術館に焦点を当てた新しい本を準備するために、新たな調査を進め、次の段階に進むことができました。財団のおかげで、私は何度も日本を訪れ、全国を訪れることができました。TIFOの支援は私の研究に大きな変革をもたらしました。日本中の博物館を探検することによって、私は日本各地の歴史、重要性と進化をより深く調べることが出来、主題についてのユニークな洞察を得ることができました。 これはまた、私が日本の芸術界の多くの主要人物と出会い、交流すること、そして日本の芸術と文化に対する理解を深めることに役立ちました。美術館を直接訪問し、美術館の館長、学芸員、芸術家との関係を築くことは私の仕事において非常に重要です。TIFOは個人的な研究の重要性、現地での訪問と出会い、そしてそのようなプロジェクトに着手する時間を理解して下さいました。
私の研究と仕事が進歩することで、私は私の深い知識と洞察を西洋の人々だけでなく、博物館の世界や芸術の世界で働く人々、学生、旅行者と芸術愛好家等、日本の様々な読者と共有することができます。海外の日本文化に対する関心は明らかに高まっており、こうして自分の物語を分かち合う機会を得たことを光栄に思います。個人的にも、私は日本の文化に対する私の情熱が、私の職業活動と非常に密接に関連していることを大変嬉しく思いますし、このユニークな機会はTIFOの素晴らしい支援無しには有り得ませんでした。
30周年は特別な節目であり、TIFOは国際的な専門家が率いる豊富な研究とシンポジウムのプログラム等を通して、さらなる知識を育み、日本の文化についてのより良い理解を促進し続けて下さると確信しています。財団は日本と世界の他の国々との架け橋であり、将来の世代の専門家や専門的なプロジェクトの発展において重要な役割を果たします。 TIFOが今後、幅広い訴求力を持つ「Japan-Insights」等を通して、その存在を専門家だけでなく、もっと広く世に知られるようになることを願っています。
