Voices from the World

On behalf of Japanese Studies as well as representative of all our colleagues at the University of Cambridge, please accept our heartfelt congratulations on your 30th anniversary. The Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO) is absolutely essential for Japanese Studies across the globe. It supports a very broad range of cultural and scholarly projects in particular and is a unique and invaluable presence in the field of Japanese Studies. Covering numerous symposia and conferences, the development of Japanese Studies programmes, financial support of individual students of Japanese language and Japanese research through bursaries, cultural programmes, support of academic organisations and annual meetings, TIFO is central to our lives. Perhaps most significantly, related to the further development of scholarship involving Japan TIFO is the single most important supporter of academic and cultural activities for Japanese Studies. Indeed, without that support, we would have fewer students, less competence on Japan, many innovative projects would never get off the ground, and we would be far more restricted in the kind of research that we strive to achieve.

Looking forward, it is hard to imagine what else TIFO can do that it is not already doing. It is original in its approach and bolsters both advanced research and more basic programming. Our biggest wish at Cambridge is that such a vision can continue unimpeded so that the breadth of activities continues for another thirty years. Japan’s place in academe and in the enhancement of our understanding of its role in the world need support from organisations such as TIFO, and the model it has provided, and continues to provide, serves as an inspiration to both those fortunate enough to receive that support and to those who are considering offering contributions. We wish TIFO the very best in the future and look forward to seeing both current activities continue and new initiatives launched.

　ケンブリッジ大学の全ての同僚を代表するとともに日本研究チームを代表して、30周年を迎えられましたことを心からお祝い申し上げます。東芝国際交流財団（TIFO）は、世界中の日本研究にとって絶対に不可欠な存在です。特に非常に幅広い文化的・学術的プロジェクトをサポートしており、日本研究の分野では唯一で非常に貴重な存在です。 TIFOの活動は、数多くのシンポジウムや会議、日本研究プログラムの開発、日本語を学ぶ学生に対する奨学金、文化プログラム、学術団体の支援、年次総会などをカバーされており、私たち日本研究者の取り組みの根幹に関わっておられます。最も重要なことには、日本研究のさらなる発展に関連して、TIFOは学術的および文化的活動の唯一、かつ最も重要な支持者です。実際、その支援がなければ、私たちはより少ない学生数で、より少ない日本研究のリソースに甘んじなければならなくなり、また、多くの革新的なプロジェクトが立ち上がることは決してなく、我々が達成しようと努める種類の研究ははるかに制限されていたでしょう。

　TIFOがかつてまだ行ったことが無いことで、将来何ができるかを想像するのは困難です。TIFOはそのアプローチにおいて独創的であり、そして高度な研究とより基本的なプログラミングの両方の強化に貢献しておられます。ケンブリッジ大学の私たちの最大の願いは、そのようなビジョンが妨げられずに継続され、幅広い活動が今後も30年間続くことです。日本が世界のアカデミズムで占める位置と、世界におけるその役割についての理解を深めるためには、TIFOのような組織からの支援が必要であり、それが提供し続けてきたモデルは、その支援を受ける幸運な人や、寄付をすることを考えている人たちへも示唆を与えるものとなるでしょう。私たちはTIFOのさらなる発展を心より祈念すると共に、現在の活動が今後も継続され、新たな取り組みが始められることを楽しみにしています。
