It is a great pleasure to congratulate the Toshiba International Foundation on its 30th anniversary. The V&A has enjoyed a long relationship with TIFO dating back to its earliest years, when it provided the funds that enabled us to improve the storage of our important collection of Edo-period Japanese illustrated books.
More recently, a grant from TIFO allowed us to invite speakers from Japan for the conference entitled Collecting Future Japan that took place at the V&A on 27 May 2016. This was held to celebrate the re-opening of the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art in November 2015 following a major upgrade and redisplay, undertaken in recognition of the extension of the Toshiba Corporation’s naming of the gallery until 2021. Another event that took place in May 2016 was the Japan Festival for Families. This featured the Masuda String Puppets from Shimane prefecture, whose visit to the UK was similarly supported by TIFO.
The close rapport we have with TIFO has developed because of the receptivity and openness of its successive presidents to the needs and aspirations of the V&A. The willingness of TIFO to listen, respond and encourage us to deliver our objectives has made our relationship a pleasure to develop and maintain.
This has been particularly true of the support TIFO has provided for the conservation of our internationally recognised collection of Japanese lacquer. Four years of funding from 2004 to 2008 enabled us to conserve the Mazarin Chest, a renowned example of Japanese lacquer made in Kyoto for export to Europe at the end of the 1630s and one of the highlights of the V&A’s collection. This involved a Japanese lacquer conservator making a series of visits to London to work with V&A conservators, scientists and curators. TIFO also helped us buy essential laboratory equipment and funded the creation of a gallery interactive incorporating many of the discoveries made during the conservation project.
TIFO has since been helping us build on the knowledge gained through the Mazarin Chest project. It provided us with funds to employ a conservator to work on a woman’s lacquer palanquin (norimono) for display in the Toshiba Gallery in September 2017. TIFO also funded the V&A’s senior conservator specialising in lacquer to spend two weeks in April 2018 training in one of Japan’s leading lacquer conservation studios. A further visit is planned for autumn 2019.
Our relationship with TIFO is enormously important and we are extremely grateful for everything it has done for us over the years. I very much hope we will continue to work together for both of us have the same aim, which is to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Japan and its culture.
東芝国際交流財団が創立30周年を迎えることを嬉しく思います。 V&AとTIFOとの関係は、江戸時代の日本の挿絵入り読み物の重要なコレクションの保全を改善することを可能にする助成金を頂いた時にまで遡り、長い信頼関係を育んできました。
ごく最近では、TIFOからの助成金により、2016年5月27日のV&Aで開催された「Collecting Future Japan」というシンポジウムに日本からの講演者を招聘することができました。これは、2021年までの東芝のギャラリーの命名延長にあたって行われた同ギャラリーの主要な改善、そして展示リニューアル後の2015年11月の東芝日本ギャラリーの再オープンを記念して開催したものです。2016年5月に当館が実施したもう一つの大きなイベントは「Japan Festival for Families (家族のための日本の祭り)」でした。ここでは島根県出身の益田糸繰り人形劇を取り上げましたが、同人形劇団は、同じく英国への訪問についてTIFOの支援を受けています。
TIFOとの密接な関係は、V＆Aのニーズとビジョンに対する、歴代の館長の受容性と開放性により発展してきました。 TIFOが私どもの目的を達成するために、耳を傾け、必要な対応をし、そして励ましてくださったことは、私たちの関係を維持・発展させる原動力となりました。
国際的に認められている日本の漆のコレクションを保護するためにTIFOが提供した支援は特筆すべきものです。 2004年から2008年までの4年間の資金援助により、1630年代末にヨーロッパに輸出するために京都で製造された日本の漆器の有名な例であり、V＆Aのコレクションのハイライトの1つであるMazarin Chestを修復することができました。このために、日本の漆修復家が、V＆Aの修復家、科学者、学芸員と連携して仕事をするためロンドンを訪れました。 TIFOはまた、私たちが必要不可欠な実験装置の購入や、修復プロジェクトの期間中になされた多くの発見を紹介する対話型情報端末の作成に資金を供給してくださいました。
TIFOはそれ以来、Mazarin Chestプロジェクトを通して得られた知識を基に私たちの漆展示を発展させることに協力頂いており、2017年9月には、東芝ギャラリーで展示するための女性の漆籠（norimono）に取り組むための修復資金を助成くださいました。V&Aのベテラン修復士が2018年春に続き、2019年秋にも日本の漆藝術工房で研修することを援助頂いております。
TIFOとの関係は非常に重要であり、私たちは長年に渡り、私たちのために行ってきて下さったすべての事に非常に感謝しています。私たちが共通の目的を持ち、日本とその国の文化に対する理解を促進するために協力し続けることができることを切に願っております。
