Warmest congratulations to the 30th anniversary of Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO). This is really worth celebrating and I wish the foundation a long and prosperous life so that more academics can continue to profit from its excellent support!

The European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) at Stockholm School of Economics has been working with TIFO for many years.

TIFO has been very helpful in many different aspects. Thanks to the grants and support from TIFO, we were able to, not only successfully organize several international conferences, but also publish an edited book in the series with Routledge: EIJS, East Asian Economics and Business.

Last year, with the grant from TIFO, we organized an international conference titled “EU-Japan Future Partnership: Ready for the ‘Big Bang’?”. The conference was especially meaningful because last year marked several milestones: the European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN), which is a network of leading European Japan scholars conducting policy-relevant work and research on Japanese politics, economics and security, and Europe-Japan relations, celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and Sweden and Japan also celebrated their 150 years of diplomacy. TIFO’s support has therefore been of utmost importance, not only for EIJS, but EJARN as well.

A few members from EJARN contributed to the publication of the edited book titled “The EU-Japan Partnership in the Shadow of China: The Crises of Liberalism.” Book launch events have been held both in Tokyo and Brussels and the publication was very well-received.

Furthermore, TIFO has provided financial assistance to a number of different European universities when EJARN has been hosting an annual conference in different locations within Europe.

Therefore, on behalf of EJARN, I also would like to deliver our sincere appreciation and thanks to TIFO. Without TIFO’s generous support, we would not have been able to grow our research activities to the level they are today. TIFO’s contribution has helped us to continue developing and improving our research on various topics.

One more thing I would like to point out is that I find TIFO personnel very competent and excellent to work with. Without intervening they have always shown support for our project and occasionally also attended conferences or book launches. It is not only the financial support that is provided but also a heart to heart relation.

　TIFO30周年、心からの祝辞をお送りいたします。実に喜ばしく、また、TIFOが末永く活動を続けることで、素晴らしい支援を受ける研究者が増えることを願っています。

　ストックホルム商科大学にある欧州日本研究所（EIJS）は、長年TIFOと活動を共にしてきました。

　TIFOはさまざまな面で助けてくださいました。 TIFOからの助成金を得て、私たちは少なからぬ数の国際会議を開催にごぎつけましたし、会議での発表を編集した共著「EIJS, East Asian Economics and Business」をRoutledge社から出版することもできました。

　昨年には、TIFOから助成を受けて、「EUと日本の今後のパートナーシップ：いよいよ「ビッグバン」か？」をテーマにした国際会議を開催しました。この年は節目を迎えたことからも、この国際会議は、格別に意義深いものでした。　というのも、EJARN（日本の政治、経済と安全保障、欧日関係に関する政策研究を行っているヨーロッパ日系先進学者のネットワーク）にっとって10周年であり、スウェーデンと日本、両国の修好150周年を祝う年だったからです。従い、TIFOの支援はEIJSだけでなくEJARNにとってもとても意味あるものでした。

　EJARNの数名のメンバーの貢献により、「The EU-Japan Partnership in the shadow of China: The Crises of Liberalisum」というタイトルの本を出版できました。出版記念のイベントは東京とブリュッセルの両方で開催され、好評を得ました。

　さらには、TIFOはEJARNがヨーロッパ内のさまざまな大学で年次会議を開催する際に、これらの大学に助成してきました。この支援について、私は、EJARNを代表してTIFOに心から感謝を申し上げます。

　TIFOの寛大な支援がなければ、私たちは今日のレベルまで研究活動を発展させることができなかったかもしれません。 TIFOは、さまざまなトピックスに関する私たちの研究が進展と向上を続けることを支援してくれました。

　もう1つ指摘しておきたいのは、TIFOの担当者は非常に有能で、仕事にも優秀だということです。直接会わなくても、彼らは常に私たちのプロジェクトへの支持を示しており、時折会議や本の発表にも出席していました。提供されるのは経済的支援だけでなく、心と心の関係です。
