Voices from the World

The European Association for Japanese Studies was founded in 1973 with the objective of advancing the study of Japan throughout Europe. Since its inception, the EAJS has been striving to encourage and support the research of younger scholars and graduate students at European universities. In this crucial field, the Toshiba International Foundation has been our most important supporter for many years due to its generous financial support.

Thanks to funding provided by TIFO, the EAJS has been able to offer three different programmes to support younger scholars:

1) The Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships for PhD students. The TIFO Fellowships provide early career researchers with a unique opportunity to conduct short-term research in Japan and are widely known and appreciated in the European research community. TIFO Fellowships are offered annually since 1998. In total, 52 PhD students have been awarded a Fellowship until 2018.

2) The annual EAJS PhD Workshops, where selected doctoral students present their research ideas and receive feedback from senior scholars and their peers. EAJS PhD Workshops have been held since 2000, initially irregularly, but annually since 2010. A total of 230 PhD candidates participated in the workshops until 2018.

3) TIFO Travel Grants for younger scholars for the 15th EAJS International Conference in 2017 in Lisbon, which enabled particularly PhD candidates and young postdoctoral fellows without a salaried position or access to a university research budget to travel to this conference and to present their work and to expand their networks with other scholars in the field. 20 junior scholars were awarded a TIFO Travel Grant in 2017.

The activities we are able to carry out thanks to TIFO’s generous support are extremely helpful to advance excellent research on Japan as well as to build robust networks among young scholars in this academic field. In this respect, we are eagerly pursuing our latest TIFO funded project, i.e. the establishment of a vast and formalised alumni network. This EAJS-TIFO Alumni Network consists of former recipients of TIFO Fellowships and participants in the PhD workshops. It has currently 301 members. We will continue to expand the network and will organise regular activities to keep former participants in TIFO activities engaged.

We are immensely grateful to the Toshiba International Foundation for continuing to support our activities to promote young scholars. We would not have been able to offer the above mentioned programmes without this support. The cooperation with TIFO has always been extremely smooth and pleasant, and TIFO’s support has always been highly reliable and sustainable. We always felt that TIFO did not only support us financially, but took an active interest in our activities and also in the projects and careers of the young academics who benefited from their support. TIFO, it seems to us, has always considered our work to be important and has shown a great deal of trust and commitment, which has motivated and encouraged us.

We very much hope that TIFO will continue to endorse our various activities to promote the study of Japan.

　ヨーロッパ日本研究協会（EAJS)は、ヨーロッパ全域で日本の研究を進めることを目的として1973年に設立されました。設立以来、EAJSはヨーロッパの大学の若い学者や大学院生の研究を奨励し支援するよう努めてきました。この重要な分野において、東芝国際交流財団（TIFO）は、その寛大な財政的支援により、長年にわたり最も重要な支持者となっています。

　TIFOが提供する資金のおかげで、EAJSは若い学者を支援するために3つの異なるプログラムを提供することができました。

1) 東芝国際交流財団奨学生のためのTIFOフェローシップは、初期のキャリア研究者に日本で短期研究を実施する機会を提供することで、ヨーロッパの研究コミュニティで広く知られ評価されています。 TIFOフェローシップは、1998年から毎年開催されています。合計で、52人のPhD学生が2018年までフェローシップを受けました。

2） 年次EAJS PhDワークショップでは、選ばれた博士課程の学生が自分の研究のアイデアを発表し、上級学者とその仲間からフィードバックを受けます。 EAJS PhDワークショップは2000年以来、当初は不定期に開催されていましたが、2010年以降毎年開催されています。2018年までに合計230人のPhD候補者がワークショップに参加しました。

3) 2017年にリスボンで開催された第15回EAJS国際会議に若手研究者のためのTIFO助成金により、特に博士号取得候補者や大学院研究予算を得ずに博士号を取得した研究者がこの会議に出席し、発表し、分野内の他の学者とのネットワークを拡大することができました。 2017年に20人の若手研究者がTIFO助成金を授与されました。

　TIFOの寛大な支援のおかげで、日本に関する優れた研究を推進し、この学問分野の若い研究者の間で強固なネットワークを築くことが出来ます。

　現在、私たちはTIFOの支援の下で、広範囲で正式なアラムナイ（卒業生）のネットワーク確立に取り組んでいます。このEAJS-TIFO同窓会ネットワークは、過去のTIFOフェローシップ制度（1998年から実施）の元受領者とPhDワークショップ（2000年から実施）の参加者で構成され、現在メンバー数は301名となっています。私たちはネットワークを今後も拡大し、過去TIFOの支援を受けたアラムナイが活発な活動を続けられるよう、定期的かつ組織的な活動に取り組んで参ります。

　TIFOは、いつも私どもの取り組みに対する深いご理解と、若い研究者達の活動や今後のキャリアに大きな関心を寄せて下さっていると感じています。

　私たちはTIFOが日本の研究を促進するために私たちの様々な活動を支持し続けてくださることを切に望んでいます。
