Voices from the World
Indeed, developing Japanese studies in such small countries like Lithuania is very difficult task. As there is no continuation of Japanese studies, there are no resources accumulated, and there are no people who could develop them. So, it means you have to start everything from zero, and, yes, this is the time you desperately need some external support.
First time we applied for Toshiba International Foundation in 2007 to organize our Centre’s first academic conference. Then we were just a small team of scholars who wanted to change the situation, and we did not expect much. However, the project was successful, and thanks to the support we could attract some foreign scholars to Kaunas, a very big achievement for us then. In other words, TIFO helped us to start our academic activities, which have developed so much since then. Later we have been getting support from different foundations of the world, but TIFO for us was the first one, and thus it remains the most important one!
Our recent project supported by TIFO was a documentary “Kaunas. The City of Sugihara and Japan” released in 2018. This project is especially dear for me, because I was a film director and I really believed in the idea. Thanks to TIFO, our team could afford ourselves to make filming in Japan, which resulted in a nice movie. After release we could organize many screenings in Lithuania and Japan, when we met our audience and could hear many positive comments. These are the moments when you just love your work and feel the purpose of your life.
It all would be impossible without Toshiba. I would like to remind that this was not an easy time for Toshiba itself, but they could find some possibilities to support our project.
Finally, I would like to say that TIFO are extremely professional and very objective in selection of the projects. You always have to do your best to make your projects valid. However, despite this professional attitude, we always feel that we also have nice friends in Japan. The friends who will find time to come to the most important events, who will listen to you and will make reasonable advices during difficult times. Therefore, by expressing appreciation for all continuous support, I would like to wish the team of Toshiba International Foundation wise and professional selections, continuous energy and strength in their important path. Please, continue making the miracles for the world!
リトアニアのような小さな国で日本の研究を発展させることは実に難しい仕事です。日本の研究が継続的ではなかったので、蓄積された人的資源はなく、それらを開発する人材もいません。すべてをゼロから始めなければならないことを意味します、ということは、そうです、外部からのサポートを切実に必要とする時でもあります。
私たちは、2007年に初めて東芝国際交流財団に申請し、私たちの研究センターで最初の学術会議を開催しました。当時、私たちは小さなグループの研究者でしたが、この状況を変えたいと思ってて、でも、私たちは多くを期待していませんでした。しかし、このプロジェクトは成功しました。支援により何人かの外国人研究者をカウナスに招聘することができ、私たちにとっては大きな成果となりました。言い換えれば、TIFOは、以降ここまで発展してきた私たちの学術活動の起点のサポーターとなりました。後になって私たちは世界のさまざまな財団から支援を得ていますが、私たちのにとってTIFOが最初の支持でした、そしてそれ故に最も重要な支援でありつづけています！
TIFOが支援した私達の最近のプロジェクトはドキュメンタリー“カウナス、スギハラを、日本を想う”、2018年にリリースしました。このプロジェクトは、私にとって特別に大切なものです。というのも、私は映画監督を務めましたが、私はこの映画のアイデアに確信を持っていたからです。 TIFOのおかげで、私たちのチームは日本で映画を撮ることができ、良い映画ができました。リリース後、リトアニアと日本で多くの上映会を開くことができました。映画を観た方たちからは多くの前向きなコメントを聞くことができました。この仕事／作品をいとおしく感じ、自身の人生の目的を感じた瞬間です。
TIFOなしでは不可能でした。東芝自身にとって、容易な時期ではなかったことと思われますが、TIFOは私たちのプロジェクトを支援する手立てを見つけてくれました。
最後に、私はTIFOは非常に専門性があり、そしてプロジェクトの選抜には大変客観的であることを申し上げたいと思います。プロジェクトを有効にするためには、常に最善を尽くさなければなりません。しかし、TIFOのプロフェッショナルな姿勢と裏腹に、私たちは日本にもよき友人がいるといつも感じています。この友人は、重要なイベントに来る時間を見つけ、声に耳を傾け、困難な時期には合理的なアドバイスをしてくれます。
したがって、すべての継続的な支援に対する感謝の気持ちを述べることによって、私は、東芝国際交流財団のチームには、絶え間ざるエネルギー、そして大切な道筋を切り開く強さを望みます。世界のために奇跡を起こし続けてください。
