Voices from the World

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 30th anniversary of the Toshiba International Foundation. It has been 15 years since I had the opportunity to contact the Foundation's projects and activities. In the meantime, the Foundation continues to be a trustworthy presence to promote exchange with universities and research institutions in Asian countries.

Among the many good memories, the most impressive one is the international symposium held in Bangkok as one of the 25th anniversary events of the foundation in February 2015. The international intellectual exchange and dialogue with the theme of "Towards an Asian Paradigm for Advanced Stage of Development" to promote Japan-ASEAN collaboration opportunities is supported by the foundation and was co-hosted by Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the Graduate school of public policy, University of Tokyo (GraSPP). Opinion leaders of industry-government-academia from Thailand, and many researchers and practitioners from other ASEAN countries and Japan participated, and discussed the future vision of Asia. In addition to this, long-term intellectual exchanges and dialogues with the Indian International Economic Relations Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Institute of the University of Indonesia, the Central Economic Management Institute of Vietnam, etc. are realized due to the support of the foundation.

As a faculty member involved in international collaboration in the field of research and education at GraSPP, I am strongly sympathetic to the Foundation’s consistent efforts to promote understanding of Japan and the development of next generation human resources. When I helped high school student's international exchange program “Toshiba Youth Club Asia”, I expanded expectations for future generations. The Foundation extends the network of international and future trust relationships by showing future-oriented agenda and by supporting efforts to cultivate the grant recipients. This is not only to promote understanding of Japan, but is a big contribution to deepening trust relationship. I am convinced of the further development of the Foundation and am proud to be a partner to unfold the international network collaboration initiatives from Japan.

　東芝国際交流財団の創立30周年を心からお喜び申し上げます。私が財団の事業・活動に接する機会を得てから15年になります。この間、アジア諸国の大学や研究機関との交流を進めるうえで、財団は信頼できる大きな存在であり続けています。

　数多くの良き思い出のなかで、とりわけ印象深いのは、2015年2月に財団創立25周年記念行事のひとつとしてバンコクで開催された国際シンポジウムです。日・ASEAN連携機会の促進を掲げ、“Towards an Asian Paradigm for Advanced Stage of Development”をテーマとした国際的な知的交流・対話は、財団からのご支援をえてタイのチュラロンコン大学と東京大学公共政策大学院が共催したものです。タイからは産官学のオピニオンリーダー、その他のASEAN諸国と日本からも数多くの研究者と実務家が参加し、アジアの将来構想について議論を交わしました。このほかにも、インド国際経済関係研究評議会、インドネシア大学経済社会研究所、ベトナム中央経済管理研究所などとの長年にわたる知的交流・対話は、財団のご支援ゆえに実現しているものです。

　私は、東京大学公共政策大学院で研究・教育分野の国際連携に携わる教員として、財団が掲げる対日理解促進ミッションと、次世代人材育成への一貫した取り組みに強い共感をおぼえます。高校生の国際交流プログラムToshiba Youth Club Asiaへのお手伝いでは将来世代への期待を膨らませました。財団は、未来志向のアジェンダを示したうえで、助成先の創意を応援する取り組みにより、国際的かつ将来にわたる信頼関係のネットワークを広げています。これは、対日理解促進にとどまらず、信頼関係深化への大きな貢献です。私は、財団のさらなる発展を確信するとともに、日本発の国際ネットワーク協創イニシアティブのパートナーであることを誇りに思います。
