Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of Toshiba International Foundation.

Since establishing TIFO in 1989, you have supported a wide range of activities and projects with the basic principle of promoting further understanding of Japan in the globalizing world community. Your wide-ranging activities in Japan and overseas include symposia and seminars, cultural activities in local communities, and academic investigations and studies. Toward cultivating understanding of Japanese culture, you have carried out a growing number of programs and workshops for the next generation

I greatly respect your longstanding efforts to promote international understanding.

At ASJA International, an international organization founded in April 2000 with the support of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we aim to cultivate leaders who will become bridges between Japan and ASEAN in the future. We conduct exchange programs that deepen understanding of the Japan’s language, culture and people for students from ASEAN countries sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and also cultivate future generations of human resources who can enhance friendly relations between Japan and ASEAN.

We have built up a cooperative relationship with TIFO since FY2014, when Toshiba Youth Club Asia (TYCA) started. This one-week camp in Tokyo for Japanese and ASEAN high school students deepen international exchanges through lectures, discussions and presentations on global problems. The students from ASEAN are recommended by organizations that are members of the ASEAN Council of Japan Alumni (ASCOJA). We and TIFO have co-hosted TYCA since 2017, and we support relationship-building between ASCOJA and TIFO.

Japan and ASEAN have established a close relationship for peace and stability in Asia-Pacific. It is a “heart to heart” partnership based on the “Fukuda Doctrine” established by Japan’s prime minister in a 1977 statement. In recent years, the economic relationship between ASEAN, an open growth center, and Japan has evolved. Of course I expect to see Japan and ASEAN promote further exchanges of young people who support the continued sustainable development of Asia-Pacific, promote Japan–ASEAN international collaboration based on mutual understanding.

I want to see TIFO and ASJA International enhance their partnership through TYCA, and to contribute to the global community. I wish TIFO many more successful years.

　貴財団が設立された1989年以降、グローバル化が加速した国際社会の中で、貴財団は「対日理解促進」を基本理念とした広範な活動・事業支援に取り組んでこられました。それは国内外におけるシンポジウムやセミナー、現地社会の文化活動、日本文化理解のための学術調査・研究と、実に多岐にわたります。対日理解促進を持続的に果たすため、次世代人材の育成プログラムやワークショップも実施されています。

　国際的な相互理解の増進に長年寄与された関係の皆様のご尽力に対し、深く敬意と感謝の意を表します。

　私共アスジャ・インターナショナルは、外務省の拠出金を得て2000年4月に設立された国際的な組織で、将来日本とアセアンをつなぐ架け橋となるリーダーを育成することを目的としております。アセアン各国より受け入れた文部科学省国費留学生に対し、日本語・日本文化・日本人への理解を深める交流事業を実施し、日アセアン友好関係の強化を将来担う次世代の人材育成に努めております。

　貴財団とは、貴財団の自主事業「Toshiba Youth Club Asia (TYCA)」プログラムが初めて実施された2014年度より、協力関係を培ってまいりました。本プログラムは、東京で日本とアセアンの高校生が一週間の合宿に参加し、地球規模の諸問題に関する講義や議論、発表を通じて、国際交流を深めるものです。アセアンの高校生は、アセアン元日本留学生評議会ASCOJAに加盟する各国元日本留学生会が推薦する学生です。アスジャ・インターナショナルは2017年度より本プログラムを貴財団と共催し、ASCOJAの日本におけるカウンターパートとして、貴財団とASCOJAとの関係構築を支援しております。

　日本とアセアンは、40年以上にわたり、アジア太平洋地域の平和と安定のために緊密で対等な関係を築いてきました。それは1977年に発表された「福田ドクトリン」を礎とする「心と心」のパートナーシップです。近年では、世界の「開かれた成長センター」であるアセアンと、日本との経済相互関係も、進化の一途をたどっています。持続可能なアジア太平洋地域の発展を将来支える若い世代の交流を活発化させ、相互理解に基づく日アセアンの国際協調を促進することが、一層期待されています。

　Toshiba Youth Club Asia (TYCA)プログラムを通して、貴財団とアスジャ・ASCOJAの連携が強化され、共に国際社会への貢献を果たしていくとともに、貴財団の今後益々のご発展を心より祈念申し上げます。
