My involvement with the TIFO Japan-Insights program has been a most enjoyable experience. I believe it has provided a significant platform for a wider understanding of a unique Japanese historic subject that remains relatively little known throughout the world – as it is within Japan.

The subject to which I refer is that of pre-Meiji Japanese manufactured clocks. These clocks told the ancient temporal time determined by hours based on the variances of dawn and dusk throughout the year. These clocks are known as wadokei.

From a wide knowledge of the subject, Japan-Insights is the only major communication medium known to wadokei enthusiast. It enables anyone interested in the subject to focus their interests within Japan, whether as a serious collector or as a passing horological or technical interested party.

From a personal viewpoint, as a Scot living half-way around the world, I found it very difficult to identify how I might explore wadokei during a visit to Japan in 2011. I had a breadth of general experience and research in horological matters, yet I found it difficult as a foreign tourist to identify where in Japan I might learn more of wadokei. It took two further visits with a great deal of support from friends in Japan to develop a fuller understanding of the subject. My enthusiasm to work with the TIFO Japan-Insights was to hopefully pass on to others the experience and knowledge I had gained in understanding and visiting collections of wadokei.

I hope that visitors to Japan have found my information of interest and use. As 2020 approaches and people from around the world plan their visit to Japan for the Olympic Games, I hope some will consider sharing my passion for wadokei and turn to Japan-Insights to make their visit as enjoyable and focused as possible.

　TIFOのJapan-Insightsプログラムへの参加は、実に楽しい経験でした。Japan-Insightsは、日本国内でもそうだと思うのですが、世界では比較的知られていない日本ならではの歴史的なテーマをより広く理解するための重要なプラットフォームを提供してきたと思います。

　私がエッセイにしたテーマは、明治以前に日本でつくられた時計です。これらの時計は、年間を通して夜明けから夕暮れまでの時間の長さが変わることで規定されていた古くからの不定時を伝えました。これらの時計は和時計として知られています。

　このテーマに関する幅広い知識から、Japan-Insightsは、和時計愛好家が知る唯一の主要なコミュニケーション媒体です。和時計というテーマに興味がある誰にも、それが真剣なコレクターでも、あるいは一時的に時計学的または技術的な関心がある人であっても、Japan-Insightsが日本での彼らの関心に応えています。

　一個人の視点で言わせて頂くと、この地球のほぼ反対側に住むスコットランド人にとって、2011年に日本を訪れた時、どのようにしたら和時計を研究できるのかを理解するのは、非常に難しいことでした。私は、時計についての総合的な経験と調査を体験してきましたが、それでも、一外国人観光客が日本で和時計についてより多くを学ぶことができるところを見つけるのは難しいと思いました。このテーマについてより深く理解するためには、日本の友人からの多大な協力を得ることができましたが、さらに2回来日しました。 私が和時計のコレクションを理解する中で得た経験と知識をできるなら他の人にも伝えたいとの強い想いから、TIFOのJapan-Insightsに協力しました。

　私は日本への訪問者が私の興味についての情報をみつけて、使ってくれることを願っています。 2020年が近づき、世界中からの人々がオリンピックのために日本を訪問することを計画しています。その人たちの中には、私の和時計への情熱を共有し、Japan-Insightsを使ってより滞在を楽しく、また可能な限りテーマに絞った時間を過ごすことを願っています。
