Voices from the World

On behalf of the Kanayama Megaliths Research Center, I send you our heartiest congratulations on your 30th anniversary. We are participating in Japan-Insights by sharing our excitement about the faublous megalithic solar observatory from Jōmon period Japan.

The Kanayama Megaliths have been functioning as a solar calendar observatory for 5,000 years and more. The research to decode its mysteries began twenty years ago. Already, much has been learnt about how the different megalith groups function together as a system. Through the coordination of 29 different observations throughout the year, a truly super-accurate calendar is determined.

It is timely that this magnificent creation of ancient people be shared with the rest of the world through Japan-Insights. For then, it will be globally recognized that human beings so long ago had the capacity and the initiative to undertake such a grand undertaking. Data had to be collected over a long period of time; designers must have refined their proposed structures many times to fine-tune them; technologies for accurately building the megalithic structures had to be developed, tested and refined. Clearly, only a cooperative society could have accomplished this feat.

To observe the path of the sun at the location of the Kanayama Megaliths in a forested mountain valley is challenging, indeed. Within the constraints of limited time and place of observations, a unique method was created. A solar calendar with unheard-of accuracy was produced.

The entire world will benefit from knowing about the Kanayama Megaliths. There will be advances in many academic disciplines as well as general awareness of ancient minds. When more people learn about this phenomenon, they may discover other similar cases in their part of the world. We know that to experience the Kanayama Megaliths is to feel a oneness and unity with the natural world and all of humanity.

While Japan-Insights is showcasing unique aspects of Japanese culture, at the same time, we feel that it is emphasizing the oneness of all people of the world. Therefore, we at the Kanayama Megaliths Research Center are happy to support the Toshiba International Foundation, and we wish its continued success beyond year 2020.

　金山巨石群リサーチセンターを代表して、30周年を迎えられたことをお祝い申し上げます。 私たちのJapan-Insightsへの参加は、縄文時代の日本に作られた驚くべき巨石の太陽観測所に対する熱い思いを発表することにあります。

　金山巨石群は5000年以上前から太陽の暦を観測するしくみ（天文台）として機能してきました。その謎を解き明かすため20年前に研究が始まりました。異なる巨石群がシステムとしてどのように機能するかについては、既に多くのことが解明されています。年間29種もの異なる観測を組み合わせることにより、極めて正確な暦が見出されています。

　折よくJapan-Insightsを通じて古代の人々の壮大な創造が、世界の人々と共有されることになり、長期間にわたるデータ収集、設計者による初期構成の度重なる改良と微調整、巨石群構成を正確に実現する技術開発とそれに伴うテスト、改良――かくも古い時代の人間がそのような大事業に取り組む能力とイニシアチブを持っていたことを世界に認識していただく機会となりました。協業できる社会だったがゆえにこの偉業を成し遂げることができただろうことが明らかです。

　森林深い山の谷の金山巨石群の場所で太陽の軌道を観察するのは、実に困難が伴います。限られた時間と場所での観察という制約の中で、独自の方法が生まれました。これまでにない正確な太陽暦ができあがりました。

　金山巨石群について知ることで全ての人びとに得ることが多くあるはずです。つまり、古代人の考え方について、一般人の認識が進むだけでなく、研究者にとっても、多くの研究分野で進歩があると考えます。より多くの人々がこの現象を知ることになれば、世界のさまざまな地域で、同様のケースを発見するかもしれません。金山巨石群を経験するということは、自然界とすべての人類との同一性と調和を感じることなのです。

　Japan-Insightsは日本文化のユニークな側面を紹介していますが、同時に、それは世界のすべての人々にある同一性を強く主張していると感じます。金山巨石群リサーチセンターは東芝国際交流財団の活動を喜んで応援します。そして、2020年を越えて財団の成功が続くことを願っています。
