Miyagi Michio Memorial Concert
Michio Miyagi (1894-1956) was one of Japan's outstanding early 20th century musical geniuses, a koto performer, composer and innovator who made the instrument globally significant. The Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies at Columbia University arranged a concert of his works to honor and commemorate Miyagi in 2016, the 60th anniversary of his death, at the Merkin Concert Hall in New York on October 5. A collaboration between Japanese and American artists, the concert featured five Japanese koto players, an American shakuhachi player and an American viola player.
