TIFO supports projects to foster students and young researchers who will major in Japan studies or contribute to deepen international understanding of Japan and to strengthen the relations between Japan and other countries.

U.S.-Japan Network for the Future and the Mansfield-Luce Asia Scholars Network

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation operates the U.S.-Japan Network for the Future, a 2-year program to foster next-generation leaders able to promote understanding between Japan and the United States, and the Mansfield-Luce Asia Scholars Network, a 1-year program to increase exchanges among East Asian researchers, primarily in Japan, the United States and Korea. The 2021 Network for the Future program included a webinar and conference to commemorate Dr. Ezra Vogel, the prominent East Asian scholar, while the Asian Scholars Network program included a retreat in Montana and a two-week study trip to Asia.

Development of a Japanese teacher training program embracing revitalization of provincial communities

Aiming to build a sustainable system for providing quality Japanese-language education in provincial cities in Vietnam, the project focused on developing and producing textbooks to train Japanese language teachers, who can contribute to the revitalization of provincial communities through proactive communications. An intensive on-line course to nurture Japanese-language teachers was also implemented, in collaboration with Japanese university students.
