Japanese New Individualized Major Program (IMP): Sustainable Global Peace
Japanese Studies at Indiana university had traditionally focused on language and culture, but in fiscal 2024, with the aim of contributing to world peace, the university expanded its scope and peacebuilding curriculum with a field study program centered on Japan. Initiatives that students participated in included International Kids Guernica; a two-week field trip where 12 students visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hear firsthand accounts from atomic bomb survivors and reflect on the meaning of peace; and an online dialogue with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The results persuaded the university to establish a special Japan studies course aimed at contributing to sustainable world peace, in March 2025.
